"Li's painting gives a rare opportunity to glimpse into the latest form of the Eurasian art..." Art and Culture - AI Leisure Magazine. "Chinese by birth and French by nationality, Li Chevalier's work draws not only from the centuries of artistic expression within these two cultures, but also from every country with which she has associated. She exerts an unflinching humanistic influence on this century's art as it too transcends borders to view the world with the inner eye of its many cultures..." English daily: Peninsula "Yin is the silent and shrewd female, representing the receiving force, associated with earth. Yang is the burly male, representing the giving force, associated with heaven. Both are primordial forces possessing completely opposing attributes. Li chevalier's art reflects the inner balance existing between Yin and Yang: the balance between water(chiaro) and ink ( scuro). Her art is influenced by Chinese cosmology, which reflects the use of primal colors. Her vision of a veil descending on the earth and protecting us from a twist in fate is exemplified in her mixture of translucent grays that fluctuate in a wave-like cycle between two forces: fantasy and idealism; black and white; yin and yang. Li Chevalier achieves depth and complexity in her canvases by working with ink and brush. Through her use of ink, she creates a rhythmic balance between brightness and darkness; density and lightness; texture and shade. The brush strokes give her paintings rhythm and beauty depicting the outward and inner qualities of the subject while unconsciously, also revealing the distinctiveness of the watercolorist herself. Abandoning the concept of reality, the artist's abstract forms represent infinite spaces where traditional realism and contemporary art materialize into a melding of East and the West. Each painting bears the stamp of her own cultural identity and personal vision." The gallery committee of Viginia Commonwealth University School of Arts |
